R&B Field

R&B tracks have been overshadowed by hip-hop collaborations in the past years. Despite some noteworthy comebacks and some critically-acclaimed records this field seems to be very weak this time. We might see thought some surprise nominees.

Best R&B Performance: The biggest berths come from: Tamar Braxton (“Love & War”) and Fantasia/Kelly Rowland/Missy Elliot (“Without Me”). The other possible contenders here include: Miguel (“How Many Drinks?”);  John Legend (“The Beginning”); Robin Thicke (“4 the Rest of My Life”); and Janelle Monáe/Erykah Badu (“Q.U.E.E.N.”). Also watch out for Rihanna (“Pour It Up”) and Justin Timberlake (“Pusher Love Girl”)

Best Traditional R&B Performance: I don’t really follow this genre and it’s somewhat hard for me to define “traditional R&B” however a quick web search threw the following line-up: Fantasia (“Get It Right); Teena Marie (“Love Letter”); Bruno Mars (“If I Knew”); Toni Braxton/Babyface (“Hurt You”)  and Booker T. Jones/Anthony Hamilton (“Gently)

Best R&B Song: Combining my predictions on the previous categories and other submissions. These are my bets in order of likelihood: Tamar Braxton/LeShaw Daniels/Makeba Riddick (“Love & War”); Fantasia Barrino/Missy Elliot/Harmony Samuels/Kyle Stewart (“Without Me”); Miguel Pimentel (“Candles in the Sun”); Ari Levine/Phillip Lawrence/Bruno Mars (“If I Knew”); and Ledisi (“I Blame You”)

Best R&B Album: Certain locks here include John Legend (Love in the Future) and India.Arie (Songversation). The other possible contenders I’d be rooting for here are Charlie Wilson (Love, Charlie); Alicia Keys (Girl on Fire); Keyshia Cole (Woman to Woman)

Best Urban Contemporary Album: Also have two locks here the critically acclaimed Janelle Monáe (The Electric Lady) and the commercial success from Rihanna (Unapologetic). This category might contain five nominees this time as there are many contenders: Fantasia (Side Effects of You); The Weeknd (Kiss Land); Ciara (Ciara); Kelly Rowland (Take A Good Game); Tamar Braxton (Love & War).
