Top Ten: Best Venezuelan Bands

Juldia-de-la-independencia-venezuela_001y 5th is independence in Venezuela, my country of origin. And right now Venezuela is all over the news for all the wrong reasons but we are not going to talk about that. Today we are going to celebrate my country by giving you the ten Venezuelan bands and duos I consider the best.

Venezuela is geographically located in South America. However 80% of its population lives along the Caribbean coastline, therefore the music of choice is tropical. Some of the biggest names in this genre include Oscar D’León and Guaco. But this country is home to 30 million people and Continue reading “Top Ten: Best Venezuelan Bands”

TOP TEN: Best Canadian Artists

It is July 1st and is the national holiday of my adoptive country, Canada. And because of this special occasion I’ve decided to create my top ten of Canadian artists I consider the best. Canada has plenty of them and some of the most iconic names in modern music such as Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, and Bryan Adams to the powerful voices of Céline Dion and k.d. lang as well as some of the current global superstars like Justin Bieber and Drake. However, this is a list of my favourites:

TOP TEN: Favourite new tracks of the week

jakebugg-feb16-1

On this week’s Top 10 of favourite new tracks there are returning acts after a few years off the studio and completely new artists I’ve never heard of. Among the new artists I discovered are NYC-based band The Mystery Lights whose psychedelic rock number “Follow Me Home” sounds like it was taking straight from the seventies; the psychedelic R&B-esque track “Acid Test” by Toronto artist River Tiber; seventeen-year old Declan McKenna with the blues-rock song “Bethlehem”; and the Local Natives a synth-pop band from Los Angeles. There are also new tracks from British folk-rock singer/songwriter Jake Bugg, indie pop Continue reading “TOP TEN: Favourite new tracks of the week”

TOP TEN: Favourite new tracks of the week

adia-victoria-afropunk-brooklyn-august-2015

Since my last top ten of favourite new tracks I have unsubscribed from Apple Music (due to its terrible customer service) and Spotify Premium (it’s a dollar expensive than other music apps, lol), and I got myself into Tidal Premium mostly to hear Beyoncé’s new record.

Tidal is a great music app with a higher sound quality, more exclusivity, a better interface and almost everyone is there even Taylor Swift (except her 1989, I have it on vinyl anyways.) The only problem with the app is the fact that you cannot shuffle all of your music yet you can queue songs. Continue reading “TOP TEN: Favourite new tracks of the week”

TOP TEN: Favourite tracks of the week

With Beyoncé’s surprise album last Monday, almost every other release got overshadowed. But since I don’t have Tidal and I’m not a big fan to buy her music, I had to rely on the mathematical algorithms of Apple Music and then, Spotify for new music. I must say that I found an interesting mixture of 90s-influenced alternative rock tunes. They are also some known acts, though.

For the week ending on May 1st, here are my ten favourite tracks:

#10 “Stockholm (Remastered)” — In-Flight Safety

In-Flight Safety is a band from Nova Scotia (Canada) formed in 2003. I just discovered them this Continue reading “TOP TEN: Favourite tracks of the week”

TOP TEN: Favourite tracks of the week

2016 in music had been a bit slow to kick in. However, the month of April had seen a lot of anticipating releases and artists coming back after years out of the studio (Santana, PJ Harvey, Gwen Stefani). This top-ten ranking include songs from both mainstream and independent artists, and they could also come from anywhere in the world.

For the week ending on April 17, these are my ten favourite tracks:

#10 Daughter  — “Numbers”

The single “Numbers” by English band Daughter was originally released last November and had grown steadily among critics who are now considering it one of the best tracks Continue reading “TOP TEN: Favourite tracks of the week”

TOP TEN: FAVOURITE NEW TRACKS OF THE WEEK

I will be starting a new section: A weekly top ten countdown of my ten favourite recently discovered tracks. Let me warn you, they will come from both mainstream and independent artists, any genre (though must likely pop/rock and alternative music), and you might find songs in foreign languages. They are not necessarily new released songs during the last week but simply represent a way to share new music I discover.

For the week ending on February 21st, here are my favourite ten tracks: Continue reading “TOP TEN: FAVOURITE NEW TRACKS OF THE WEEK”

TOP TEN: BEST SONGS OF 2015

bestsongsof2015It is Christmas Day and there are only five days to go for 2016. And I couldn’t let this year without letting you know which were the songs I considered the best of 2015. (This delayed list was due to travel)

It was a very difficult task to come up with a list of only ten songs. That it’s why I decided to include only those songs that were released as singles in 2015. Regardless of their original release date through an album, EP, music video, etc. As a result, this list has a more commercial and radio-friendly approach than my best albums list. TOP TEN: BEST ALBUMS OF 2015

bestalbumsof2015As 2015 is wrapping up and we take a break from the GRAMMYs until January (when new predictions come out). It is time to look at what this year gave us in music.
I am not a professional musician nor a music critic. I am just a fan. Therefore, I define a great album as one that captivates you from the very first song and makes you want to listen to it multiple times.
Ranging from synthpop to hip-hop to psychedelic rock. Here are the albums I considered the best of the year:
