58th GRAMMYs: Odds for the R&B field

Unlike the rest of the mainstream fields, the R&B field have five categories instead of four. Similar to rock, it has a category for best performance, for a sub-genre performance (traditional R&B), songwriters’ award and two other categories for albums (R&B and urban contemporary).

Just like the category for Best Alternative Music Album, the Urban Contemporary Album is also hard to define. The Academy defines it as an award “for artists whose music includes the more contemporary elements of R&B and may incorporate production elements found in urban pop, urban Euro-pop, urban rock, and urban alternative”. The R&B field features two of the most nominated arists of the year: Beyoncé in three out of the five categories and Pharrell Williams in one. There is not much competition; therefore, things would be very easy to predict here. Let’s now take a look at the odds in four of the categories of this field:

57th GRAMMYs: Predictions for the R&B field

After the submissions the R&B field became more competitive now that several ‘hip-hop’ records ended up in this field. This year we might also have a lot of big names in competition. It is also a field hard to predict as sometimes the Academy voters go for authentic R&B artists, but we’ve also had new ‘urban contemporary’ acts in the running.

Here are the predictions:

  • Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne & French Montana — Loyal (East Coast Version)
  • Jhené Aiko — The Worst

56th GRAMMYs: Odds for the R&B Field

Tamar+Braxton+TamarUnlike last year, when Frank Ocean and Miguel were all over the scene. The R&B field is rather weak this time. The strongest contender here is, breakthrough artist, Tamar Braxton who is up for three of the five awards including Best R&B Performance and Song for her smash-hit, “Love And War”. Former winners, Fantasia and Anthony Hamilton, garnered three and two nods respectively. NARAS’ darlings, Alicia Keys and John Legend were relegated to Best R&B Album, only.
