58th GRAMMYs: (Very early) END OF MARCH PREDICTIONS

It’s been more than a month since the 57th GRAMMYs took place and there are still 11 months until the next ceremony occurs. But we are ready to start predicting the nominations for the 58th GRAMMY Awards that will most likely be announced in the beginning of December.

The eligibility period for the 58th GRAMMYs ranks from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015. Therefore, there is a number of potential contenders in the running already. Let’s take a look at the odds in the ‘Big 4’ categories.

Record of the Year

The current front-runner for Record of the Year is definitely “Uptown Funk!” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars. The song is, to date, the biggest hit of the year having spent a total of 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Another Brit is also in  the running, Ed Sheeran for “Thinking Out Loud”. The British singer-songwriter may complete his stake in the general field if he receives this Record of the Year nomination. Another potential nominee is “FourFiveSeconds” by Kanye West, Rihanna and Paul McCartney; because we know how much NARAS love collaborations, specially one featuring the former Beatle. Last but not least are “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift and “Something from Nothing” by the Foo Fighters.

Album of the Year

There are two serious contender for Album of the Year already. The first one is Taylor Swift’s 1989 which already gathered three nodss at the 57th GRAMMYs and spawned two number-one singles, last year-nominee “Shake It Off”, and “Blank Space”. The second contender is the politically-charged To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar who already has two GRAMMYs for the song “i”. The third favourite belongs Sonic Highways by the Foo Fighters whose last two albums have made it to the AoTY-lineup and are, so far, the most likely rock rep. Other contenders include If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late by Drake and Strangers to Ourselves by Modest Mouse.

Song of the Year

The Song of the Year line-up might ended-up once again being similar to the Record of the Year. The two strongest contenders are “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran and “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift with Max Martin and Shellback. The third favourite is the Oscar-winning song, “Glory” from the movie Selma by Common and John Legend. Other favourites include “FourFiveSeconds” (performed by Kanye West, Rihanna, and Paul McCartney) and “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and former GRAMMY-winning songwriters, Bruno Mars and Jeff Bhasker.

Best New Artist

The current front-runner, who has delighted other panelists and predictors, is British singer-songwriter, James Bay. Bay is just breaking into the North American market but won the Critic’s Choice at the 2015 BRIT Awards. The second favourite is Meghan Trainor who might pull out an ‘Ed Sheeran’ after being nominated this year for Record and Song of the Year for her number-one single, “All About that Bass”. The other favourite is pop girl group and MTV’s New Artist award winners, Fifth Harmony. Other potential nominees include 2-time GRAMMY nominee, Charli XCX and George Ezra.

  1. Fifth harmony should win for best new artist because their album has received great reviews from critics, they have done extremely well for being a new upcoming girl group. They are very talented and unique. I think the fact that they are a girl group people try to write them off but 2015 has been a great year for them. Hopefully their hard work won’t be overlooked because they’re a girl group. That doesn’t seem fair.

  2. I guess:
    – Best electric/Dance album of the year -> In colour (Jamie xx)
    – Best folk album of the year: Carrie and Lowell (Sufjan Stevens)
    – Best rock album of the year: No cities to love
    – Best rap album of the year: To pimp a butterfly (Kendrick Lamar)
    – Best pop album of the year: 1989 (Taylor)

But what will be AOTY? I can’t guess now, but I don’t expect that it’s 1989

  3. For me, I’m really sure that Taylor Swift might get 4-6(above) nomination for 2016 Grammy Awards including Record of the Year,Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Music Video for Blank Space, Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for 1989.I prove that Taylor Swift might be a big winner gong home likely 2-5 Grammys award this coming 58th Grammys next year. She will be definitely a big winner next year’s Grammy Awards depending if Adele or Sam Smith won’t release a new album this year. How come Kendrick Lamar is in for Album of the Year? His album were very stupid and not very radio-friendly. Also, his song is very ridiculous and creepy. Remember 2 years ago during the 56th Grammys, he was nominated for more than 7 Grammys including AOTY but in the end, he went home with no awards. Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud is my favorite for Song of the Year, but the only strongest competitor is Taylor Swift’s Blank Space. Although he went home without an Grammy win during 2013 and 2015 Grammys, his single”The A Team”, which was nominated in 2013 Grammys, wasn’t very enough for Grammy voters to give him a big win. Like this year, he lost to Sam Smith because his album X against In The Lonely Hour was nice melody and vocal but in the end, Smith ended up winning Best Pop Vocal Album. Meanwhile, Uptown Funk, which is a bit catchy song but still my favorite song behind Blank Space and Shake It Off by Taylor Swift, is also my favorite for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo Performance despite my frontrunner for Record of the Year will likely go to Taylor Swift because her single Blank Space has beautiful vocal and melody and the song is very pretty flawless. Rihanna’s FourFiveSeconds looks more very boring song that it’s unlikely to get a win for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Foo Fighters should not get a nod for Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Fifth Harmony should not also get a nod for Best New Artist.

  4. I have no issues with these early predictions at all, mostly because the contenders actually consist of good music. I hope this continues, especially with “Uptown Funk” and TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY getting nominations. ^_^

    1. Despite it’s still early, I believe that Uptown Funk will be in RoTY at least, and To Pimp A Butterfly in AoTY. The first is already the biggest hit of the year and the latter has created a lot of buzz.
