2014 in review: Thanks to all the visitors!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 36,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 13 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

57th GRAMMYs: Odds for Album of the Year

aoty-predictions

All bets for Album of the Year are off. And what makes this race unpredictable is how diverse (and yet so similar) the line-up is. This year’s contestants include: One folk/rock album (Beck); two urban crossover acts (Beyoncé/Pharrell); and two male British singers (Sam Smith/Ed Sheeran).

Both Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith are debuting in this category. Smith became the tenth artist to gather all four nods in the general field in one ceremony. On the other hand, Beyonce made the line-up for the second time while this is Beck’s third attempt.  Continue reading “57th GRAMMYs: Odds for Album of the Year”

57th GRAMMYs: Odds for Record of the Year

roty-predictions

This year’s line-up for Record of the Year is, by far, the weakest. None of the contenders are legendary songs that scream ‘Record of the Year’. Instead, they are  mainstream pop hits that impressed more the general public than music experts.

With the exception of Taylor Swift —who’s been nominated thrice in this category, the rest of the nominees are newbies: Iggy Azalea, Charli XCX, Meghan Trainor, and Sam Smith are contending their first GRAMMYs ever. Sia, however, is making her first appearance in the general field.

Now let’s take a look at the odds for each of the nominees. They are listed in order of likelihood of winning:  Continue reading “57th GRAMMYs: Odds for Record of the Year”

TOP TEN: Best Albums of 2014

best-ALBUMS-logo-20142014  saw the return of many veterans releasing new records after several years of hiatus from the studios. Sales in records continue to decline and now with new streaming services, mainstream pop albums have dominated the charts. However, we had tons of non-mainstream, independent, and classic rock records to decide what was the best of the year.

Major magazines like Billboard, Rolling Stones, and Pitchfork Media have been publishing their year-end list for what they consider is the best music of the year. The Gramophone Reporter is also proud to present you with its little ranking of the ten best albums of 2014Continue reading “TOP TEN: Best Albums of 2014”

TOP TEN: Best Songs of 2014

best-songs-logo-20142014 was an interesting year for music though the charts were dominated, once again, by bubblegum pop songs and viral YouTube videos. There was still a handful of songs that did not follow that formula and were determined to be iconic for the years to come. Not for their performance in the music charts but due to their excellence in production, lyricism, and melody.

2nd KUKO’s CHOICE AWARDS

Lana del Rey was the most nominated artist with four nods
Lana del Rey was the most nominated artist with four nods

Last year, I presented you the KuKo’s Choice Awards: My Own Version of the Grammys. And since this is determined to be an annual event I’ll be giving you this year’s nominees.

Both nominees and winners are entirely based on my personal taste in ten categories that I created, resembling the GRAMMYs. The eligibility period is the same as GRAMMYs (October 1, 2012 – September 30, 2013). Winners for each category will be announced on Saturday, December 20th and the ‘Album of the Year’ winner will be announced on New Year’s Eve.

And the nominees are:

57th GRAMMY nominees: Analysis and reactions

SamSmith-GrammyTwitterPhotoThe nominations for the 57th GRAMMY Awards were announced yesterday through Twitter. As you alredy know Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, and Sam Smith topped the nods with six each. Smith, on the other hand, became the 10th artist to receive nominations in all of the ‘big four’ categories in one year.

There were not many surprises or big snubs. And the first thing to notice is that the GRAMMYs have gone very commercial with radio-friendly pop songs dominating the general field. Furthermore, as far as my predictions concern; I didn’t do quite while and would say I got a 50% accuracy. Let’s take a look:  Continue reading “57th GRAMMY nominees: Analysis and reactions”
