56th GRAMMYs: Odds for the Dance/Electronica Field

daft-punk-630The Dance/Electronica field is just celebrating its eleventh year of existence. Thus meaning it is one of the youngest fields at the Grammy Awards. Before that, it was simply considered something that pop artists would do. Now, it is a fast-growing and established musical genre.

This year’s race is contested, mostly, by European musicians. In fact, the only North American representatives are; American electronica producer Pretty Lights, and Canadian pop singer Trevor Guthire (featured artist for the Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren).

Florence-machine-calvin-harris-sweet-nothingBest Dance Recording: A rule change in 2012 determined that pop artists recording dance songs were relegated to the pop field. This caused that real EDM musicians will compete here. Before that, this award was mostly dominated by pop divas (Janet Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga, etc…). For the past two years, American dubstep icon, Skrillex won the award. Now, without him, Daft Punk, or any other major EDM artist; things are quite tricky. Possibly the Academy will stay mainstream and award the prize to Calvin Harris featuring Florence Welch for the radio-friendly “Sweet Nothing”. Harris, who already holds a GRAMMY for Best Music Video, was also nominated last year and is also up for the album category. However, if voters are seeking a less-mainstream and more critically acclaimed act. Then the award belongs to British DJ Duke Dumont (featuring A*M*E & MNEK) for “Need U (100%)”; which is considered one of the best songs of the year. Another smart choice will be Kaskade –also nominated for Best Dance/Electronica album– with “Atmosphere”. Darkhorses are: Zedd ft. Foxes for “Clarity” –who was completely snubbed for album, best new artist, and remixed recording–; and Armin van Buuren and Benno de Goeji for “This Is What It Feels Like” featuring Trevor Guthrie.

Best Dance/Electronica Album: For obvious reasons, Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories is the winner by a long-shot. They hold both the audience and the critics’ love. No need to say more. the British brother duo, Disclosure for Settle, are the only ones that could beat them. Without any realistic chance are the rest of the nominees: Calvin Harris (18 Months); Kaskade (Atmosphere) –nominated here last year– and Pretty Lights (A Color Map of the Sun).
